FLOTILLA 33 CONDUCTS FIRST MEETING OF 2012, GETS BRIEFING FROM THE VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY

BECKLEY BRIEFED FLOTILLA 33 MEMBERS ON THE VA DEQ's VOLUNTEER WATER QUALITY MONITORING PROGRAM. VIRGINIA HAS OVER 50,000 MILES OF RIVERS & STREAMS. THE CHESAPEAKE BAY ALONE TOTALS 15 TRILLION GALLONS OF WATER. EACH YEAR 500 MILLION POUNDS OF SEAFOOD IS HARVESTED IN VA STATE WATERS.

STATEWIDE THE VA DEQ MONITORS CLOSE TO 5,000 STATIONS, WITH VOLUNTEERS COVERING OVER 1,800 OF THEM. THE DATA RECORDED INCLUDES DISSOLVED OXYGEN, SALINITY, PH, CHLOROPHYLL, SUBMERGED AQUATIC VEGETATION, NUTRIENTS, & SEDIMENT. IN SOME LOCATIONS BACTERIA IS ALSO MEASURED.
