AUX 27137 ASSISTS SECTOR HAMPTON ROADS & COAST GUARD STATION MILFORD HAVEN WITH POST-STORM AIDS TO NAVIGATION (ATON) VERIFICATIONS ON 09MAR13

THE U.S. COAST GUARD HAS THE RESPONSIBILITY TO ESTABLISH & MAINTAIN ALL AIDS TO NAVIGATION ON THE WATERWAYS OF THE U.S.

COMMERCIAL & RECREATIONAL TRAFFIC ON THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AND NAVIGABLE TRIBUTARIES DEPEND ON AIDS TO NAVIGATION FOR SAFE EFFICIENT PASSAGE.

THE U.S. COAST GUARD AUXILIARY PROVIDES SPECIFICALLY AUTHORIZED ASSISTANCE TO THE COAST GUARD IN ITS AIDS TO NAVIGATION (ATON) MISSION. THIS INCLUDES REPORTING DISCREPANT ATONS OBSERVED DURING ROUTINE SAFETY PATROLS & CONDUCTING ATON VERIFICATION PATROLS AFTER STORMS.

FLOTILLA 33 MEMBER MARK PATERNI OBSERVES RAPPAHANNOCK "13" ABOARD AUX 27137. ANY OBSERVED STRUCTURAL PROBLEMS, MISSING DAY BOARDS, MISSING OR BROKEN LIGHTS, SOLAR PANELS, & BATTERY BOXES ARE REPORTED TO THE COAST GUARD.

A VARIETY OF ATON STRUCTURES ARE COMMON ON THE CHESAPEAKE BAY & TRIBUTARY RIVERS. RANGE MARKS LIKE THE ONE ON HOSKINS CREEK (LOWER RIGHT ABOVE) ARE RARE.

DON GALLAGHER AT THE HELM OF AUX 27137 AT RAPPAHANNOCK "40" NEAR ISLAND POINT, NEARLY 45 NAUTICAL MILES FROM THE MOUTH OF THE RIVER.

DURING THE NEARLY 7 HOUR PATROL 43 RAPPAHANNOCK RIVER ATONS WERE VERIFIED WITH 2 MINOR DISCREPANCIES REPORTED. THE PATROL COVERED OVER 104 NAUTICAL MILES.
